Last week we discussed how to protect your garden in the winter. This week it’s

How to Protect Your Skin in Winter

The air is dry and your skin is dry.
Depending on the kind of skin you have, this can be a real problem.

I have VERY dry skin. Thank you, Mother! I mean, it is very very very dry. And not just my face, but all over my body. It is definitely true that the older you get the more dry skin can become a major problem.

I have really made a study of this. I am not one to try a new product until I have researched it, read reviews and even asked my dermatologist what she thinks. Over the years I will say I have received some of the best advice from two different (both female…) dermatologists and also from my small, independent pharmacy.

Let’s take a look at my dry skincare arsenal:

Yes, I really DO use all of these at various times and for various skin conditions.
Clockwise from top left:

  1. Palmers
This is new to me this season and came recommended by my wonderful dermatologist. Apparently it has been around for years and is often used for stretch or surgery lines. It […]

HOW TO MANAGE DRY SKIN

It’s wintertime and dry skin seems like an epidemic. Many, many people suffer from it. It can be mild: an annoying itch here and there. And it can be severe: red, itchy spots, flaky arms, legs, back and the more you itch the worse it gets.
Sound familiar?

Here are some recommendations, gleaned from years and years of very dry skin and reinforced by some excellent tips and tricks from several dermatologists.

As an aside: I choose my dermatologists very, very carefully: it is the one doctor I see the most often and where I have had more “issues” than with any other. Nothing terribly serious, but I/we are always on the lookout. I visit her every three months.

And, of course, I have learned so much from so many bloggers!

1. Moisturize

This is the #1 priority. But, be sure to apply moisturizer just after bathing. While this may seem like a no-brainer, many people don’t realize the added value in applying lotion to already moist (and thus receptive) skin. Put it all over your body! Everywhere. I won’t get into the thousands of brands: you know they are out there so go and take a look.

Here’s a new (to me) great product: a wooden handled lotion applicator for the back. Finally, a way to get some lotion […]

SKIN CARE: BLOGGERS SPEAK UP!

Wintertime = indoor heat = dry skin
There you have it: one of the most basic problems for women in the wintertime is all that skincare! Let’s explore some solutions to keep that dry skin at bay.
I have asked some of my blogging friends to contribute to this post as I thought we can all use lots of advice! I have always had very dry skin: (thanks Mother… ) But, of course, when you are young it’s not really bothersome; it’s not until you are older and, dare I say, “of a certain age” that you must D E A L with it. We all have different solutions and, of course, all skin is different, but the following are some hints and tips perhaps we can all use.

We’ll start with my personal favorites:

Lac-Hydrin Lotion
One of the best bits of advice I received was from a dermatologist about twenty years ago. Yes, for twenty years I have been using a prescription lotion for my face and body. As he said then, and it still holds true, “you can pay a lot of money and still get the same results as a drugstore product!” I use LacHydrin Lotion. While it is prescription, it costs about $5-$15 per bottle depending […]
