Don’t you love it when you find a product that REALLY helps to solve a long standing problem?

Emme Bag IMG_6436b_wm

Every time I travel, I struggle with how to put all those bottles, tubes, containers and makeup in the appropriate toiletry kit. I rarely carry on a suitcase, so what we’re talking about here is what goes into my checked bag. I’ve tried many types of kits: bulky fold overs, box-type, clear bags, opaque bags, all in one kits, and (to me, worst of all!) using up to six kits for one trip. Let me say, I really don’t think I travel with all that much! I try to follow all the “travel rules”– put shampoo, conditioner, lotions etc in travel size plastic bottles, buy the tiny tube of toothpaste and mini dental floss etc etc. Nevertheless, all those mini’s just DO add up.

It was a mess. Yes, those print bags make a cute set and yes, they do hold a lot. But bulky and awkward? More than over the top on that. That big square bag in the set is usually overflowing with all shapes and sizes of bottles and containers.

 This week’s favorite

I’ve been wanting one of these for ages. Ever since
Botanicus Candles went out of business I have been searching for just the right brand. So many candles smell just awful: overpowering, cloying, too sweet and generally not any scent I would want to live with.

This brand is a winner for me!
No, I haven’t tried all the scents, but each one that I have tested comes out way ahead of so many other brands. While it’s too bad that the wonderful “Green Tea” from Botanicus is no longer made, these scents have now become my favorite. I had asked my sister for a candle for Christmas and this is what arrived:

Take a look at this short but lovely clip of their factory. You will definitely want to try some!

Have you tried them? Do you have a favorite brand? Please do let us know!

Merrimints: a blast from the past!

Who remember these candies? Hint: you have to be “of a certain age” to know what I’m talking about.

These were probably my very favorite candy when I was young. They were sold at Maron’s Candies in and around Philadelphia. Not only did they make these wonderfully mild, pastel mints, they also made them into “sandwich mints”. Yes indeed. Just like an Oreo cookie: but these had chocolate in between two layers of fruit flavored mints.

And, like so many good things, they disappeared from sight. The company, as it turns out, was a small family run business (Delson Candy Co.) that sold out to Sara Lee who eventually stopped producing these.

So, you can imagine how delighted I was to see
The Vermont Country Store
carrying them again. They sell the plain mints and then a chocolate “dipped” version. I ordered two boxes at Christmastime and we are just about finished the last few mints. I just checked the site and it seems they no longer offer the dipped variety but only the plain mints. Either way, they are delicious.

It’s been a while, but we’re back with another in the series:

Today it’s a practical drug store item, but only relevant for those of us who wear contact lenses!

I’ve worn one, bi-focal, lens in my left eye for years. I take it out every night and also change it out for a new one once a month.

Clear Care Contact Solution

Here are the two brands I had been using, for years and years. And then, last summer my eyes just never felt right. Irritated. Nothing terrible, but very annoying. So I went to see the doc, who said to definitely switch to Clear Care.

You know what Clear Care is? Hydrogen Peroxide!!!
As you can imagine, I shook my head in disbelief and said, no, never, I can’t put that in my eyes!

Ah well, you put your lens in this nifty little plastic jar, leave for a minimum of six hours and the hydrogen peroxide is totally neutralized and […]

Let’s get reading, shall we?

Whether you read books…. you know, the traditional hold-in-your-hand-and-turn-the-page kind, or on your iPad or other device, I’ll bet you’re always ready to hear about new reads. Right?

Here are three I read this past summer and can recommend to you:

1. The French House
by Don WallaceScreen Shot 2014-10-26 at 9.06.36 PM

I loved this book! Of course, it’s about France so it was kind of a natural like for me, but it’s great. Follow Don and his wife, Mindy, as they buy a small house on an island off the coast of Brittany,France. It is a complete, utter mess and needs A LOT of work. The problem is they have neither the money nor the time: they live in New York where they are struggling to make ends meet but want desperately to spend more time in their French house. It’s real. The story unfolds at a perfect pace; characters are introduced slowly; the details of their lives, the island, and the people are explored and there is a kind of textural quality that really appealed to me.

It’s been a while… but I’m back with the newest and latest of things I like, and use, and recommend!

Have you heard of this company and its great line of sun protection clothing?
I have become very, very aware of the sun and the damage it’s doing (and has done) to my skin. In addition to wearing sun screen every day of the year on my face and hands, I have started to buy UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing for outdoors. Yes, it’s tricky to wear long sleeves (arms are one my “problem areas”) in hot, humid weather. But these fabrics are so lightweight that it helps. And they wash, and dry, quickly and easily.

I am especially careful to always wear a “rash guard” when I swim. I do my laps, in full sun, either late morning or at lunch time and the sun is hot and bright. My gorgeous cherry/magenta rash guard with long sleeves really gives me protection: I put it on right as I head toward the pool, then peel it off as soon as I get out.

Here’s a selection from their catalog:
