If I don’t “do” heights…..ever, of any kind….what was I doing up 212 feet above the Hudson River? Yes, I have asked myself that question for over a year; ever since the Walkway Over The Hudson opened!
No way. Never. You will never get me up there and out over the water. Period.

Some information about this bridge:
It opened in 1888 to rail traffic. It was, at the time, the longest bridge in the world! Yes, in Poughkeepsie!
In 1974 it was closed due to fire. For years it sat idle, slowly decaying.
Should we tear it down? No, costs too much.
Well, how about turning it into a pedestrian walkway? There were many skeptics, me among them! The group that initially worked on this idea had an office across the hall from mine, downtown. I have to say, I really never thought it would work… and yes, I have eaten my words.
It is, quite truthfully, one of the very best things about Poughkeepsie, and this area.
At 24 feet wide, and with a nice solid concrete roadway, it feels comfortable, even to me. Walkers, runners, bikers, tourists; people, dogs: it is open to everyone. It has been a huge success! Now that we’re about to leave the area, it is one of those things we wanted to do (had to do…) and I’m oh so glad we did.
